If you’re coming via Malaga Airport, you can drive to Marbella in around 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you’re checked in, the first order of business might be one of the resort’s beautiful white beaches, which are some of the most impressive places to swim or sunbathe in the whole Costa del Sol.

For a little more exploration, Marbella has a variety of historic architecture that you can check out. Make sure you visit the castle walls, which date back to the 11th century. You can also stop off at the Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square), where you can try some of the local delicacies, and the city’s Old Town is also great for food and drink.

Child safety / Seatbelt laws

•  It is compulsory for the driver and all passengers to wear a seatbelt
• Children aged under 12 and less than 135 cm tall must be seated in an appropriate child restraint for their size

Road trips from Marbella

Just outside the town, you have the whole of the Costa del Sol at your doorstep. With your car hire in Marbella, you can drive along the coast, exploring white sandy beaches and a variety of other scenic spots.

Gibraltar

In around one hour, you can drive to the British territory of Gibraltar, on the southern tip of Spain. From here, you can look across the strait of Gibraltar to the Atlas mountains in Africa. It’s a popular shopping destination due to lower taxes, and you might also spot some of the local Barbary macaques, which are the only monkeys native to Europe.

Granada

Here you can check out the famous Alhambra building, a palace and fortress complex that is one of the most famous examples of Moorish architecture. It’s probably the most-visited monument in all of Spain, and was once a self-contained city. If the crowds are a little too big around there, you can explore Granada itself.

Cadiz

This city was founded over 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians, and is often said to be the oldest city in Europe. You can check out the ancient amphitheatre, or explore the impressive artifacts in its archaeological museum.

What is driving like in Marbella?

The roads in Spain are generally in good condition, and most towns and cities are relatively well-connected.  Driving on the open road in the countryside is a breeze, although traffic coming in and out of Spain’s major cities can be noticeably bad.

Do I need winter tyres to drive in Spain?

No, there is no legal requirement for passenger cars in Spain to be equipped with winter tyres. However, many of the cars in our Spanish rental hubs will have winter tyres available as an option.
