Dalaman is just a 15-minute drive from Dalaman International Airport up the D555. This area is known as Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, for reasons that become crystal clear the moment you start exploring. Many travellers tend to use Dalaman as a base for touring the rest of Turkey’s southwest region. The beaches here are stunning and resorts are dotted across the entire coastline. Turkey’s most affluent citizens frequent this destination and they’re not shy about flashing their wealth. The port area of Dalaman is a particularly lovely place to stay and spend time people watching.
Sarigerme Beach tends to be the focal point of Dalaman. On this stretch of white sand, you’ll find all the amenities you need for a day in the sun – including loungers and umbrellas. There are many opportunities to enjoy water sports, like water skiing and sailing, too. A weekly market takes place each Friday as well, and you can find much fresh produce here.
Beyond Dalaman
Some of Turkey’s biggest attractions lie just beyond Dalaman. Whether you want to visit ancient ruins or stunning beaches, you’ll find it all in southwest Turkey.Fethiye
Fethiye is just over an hour’s drive from Dalaman along the D400. It’s easily one of the most beautiful seaside cities in Turkey. An earthquake destroyed the town in 1958, but the remains of the Ancient City of Telmessos – remarkably – stayed intact. Since then, Fethiye has become a booming tourist hub. Spend time on Calis Beach, or check out the rapids at Saklıkent Gorge.
Marmaris
Another of Turkey’s treasures, Marmaris is a quick 90km drive along the D400. This town sits inside a sheltered bay, surrounded by pine forests and mountain peaks. Hang out beachside at Patara or visit an authentic Turkish Hamam. Spend time at Marmaris Castle, dating back to 1522, complete with a small museum. And why not drive to the Datҫa Peninsula to soak up stunning Mediterranean views.
Dalyan
Dalyan, a place that’s very different from Turkey’s other Mediterranean towns, is just a 30-minute drive from Dalaman. An important must-do is visiting the Lycian tombs, carved into the cliffs that overlook the town on the west bank of the river. There are also the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Kaunos. For beachside rest and relaxation, head to Iztuzu Beach – also a nesting ground for sea turtles.
To explore all that Dalaman and beyond have to offer, take advantage of your hire car and drive.
