How to get from Sundsvall Airport to the centre of Sundsvall by car
Sundsvall Timra Airport is on the Indal river around 10 km from Timrå and 20 km north of Sundsvall. From the Avis car park at Sundsvall Airport, Sundsvall town centre is a 21km drive which takes around 22min depending on the time of day. Turn right out of the airport and head south on the E4 highway crossing the Indal river, continuing on the E4 until you reach exit 226 and follow signs towards Sundsvall Centrum.

Sundsvall’s attractive urban landscape collides with big skies and bright coastal colours giving the city real visual appeal. Sundsvall has been an important industrial hub and a visit to the city’s museum in Kulturmagasinet is a great way to trace its heritage and culture. Step away from the quayside along the attractive waterfront to tour the city’s squares and avenues with their grand stone buildings and you could be forgiven for thinking you are in Vienna or Berlin.
Stop off in Vängåvan Park to see the impressive carved fountain and for a view of the city head to the observatory at Norra Berget. If you are lucky enough to be in Sundsvall in the summer months take to the water at Himmlabadet, the city’s popular lido.

Set off on a road trip along the coast to appreciate the inspiring scenery around Sundsvall. Around an 1hr30min north of the city you’ll reach the area known as the High Coast, Höga Kusten, a UNESCO World Heritage site with the highest coastline in the world at 286 metres above sea level. On the way you’ll cross the Höga Kusten bridge, the 17th longest suspension bridge in the world.
Closer to Sundsvall is a 75 km scenic route along the coastal road to enjoy along with the Ship Harbour Trail which takes in the E4 road and runs through Söråker and Tynderö as far as Skeppshamn harbour.

Tips for driving in Sundsvall
Blessed with some of the best roads in Europe, the region north of Stockholm is easy to navigate and hiring a car is a great way to explore this part of northern Sweden. Be aware that as in the rest of mainland Europe, you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road as you leave the airport.
There are both congestion taxes and bridge tolls in Sweden and a toll is charged 24hr a day at Sundsvall’s Sundsvallsfjärden Bridge. The toll charge may be included in your booking – please check this with your Avis team.
