Pitea

From Lulea Airport, the town of Pitea can be reached in around 40 minutes via the E4. This is the perfect location to get a real taste of small-town life in Lapland. The Gulf of Bothnia’s sea and icy landscape also offers opportunities to take part in a range of outdoor activities, such as ice skating, dog sledding and snow mobile safaris. Also be sure to check out some local culture in Öjebyn, just 6km north of Pitea. Here you’ll find an early 15th-century church and clock tower. There’s also a museum about the village located in what is thought to be the oldest building in the Norrbotten region.

Tornio

Drive east of Lulea for an hour and a half (via the E4) and you’ll arrive in the Finnish city of Tornio. On the waters of the Torne river you can relax on inflatable rafts or wooden boats in the summer months. In the winter you can enjoy husky rides and reindeer sledding on the ice. If you want to relax with a day of fishing, head to the Matkakoski Fiskecamp where you can spend the day casting a line in from a boat, and even grill your catch at the camp’s barbecue area.
