Vibrant Madrid is the capital of Spain and also the largest city in the country. It offers a wealth of sightseeing opportunities, and from Madrid Gran Via you’re just a short drive to Madrid Cathedral and a host of other tourist attractions.
The Palacio Real de Madrid is another top attraction. Situated next to Plaza de Oriente Square, the royal palace is Madrid’s largest building. Selected areas are open to the public most of the year, and offer the chance to view important works of art, including frescoes and tapestries.
One of the most enjoyable things to do in Madrid is people watch; if you want to enjoy a leisurely lunch as the world goes by head to the Plaza Mayor, the city’s main square. Here there are a selection of restaurants and cafes, offering tapas and Spanish dishes to enjoy al fresco, with attractive umbrella-shaded seating areas.
After lunch check out one of Madrid’s many museums and art galleries. The Nacional Museo del Prado, one of Europe’s premier art museums, is not to be missed. The Goya Museum is another must-see.
If you’re in need of rest and quiet contemplation away from Madrid’s hustle and bustle, there are plenty of fine parks to enjoy in the city. The main one is El Parque de Ritiro; it’s perfect for an afternoon stroll and has a number of statues and monuments, plus a boating lake.
