Plan your journey from Girona Train Station
The centre of Girona lies 1km north-east of the main train station, with the heart of the city only moments away.
The Province of Girona is steeped in history, which can be best appreciated by the ancient architecture that still remains, such as the Roman walls - which were extended in medieval times. A stroll along the ramparts provides great views of the city. The Forca Vella, which was built by the Romans as well, is another ancient site worth visiting.
For both relaxation and history, head for the Banys Arabs. This is the only known bathhouse from Medieval Christian Spain. It dates from the 12th century and is based on Muslim and Roman designs of previous centuries. This bathhouse is thought to be around 1,000 years old, but it’s still functioning, and bathers can relax in the sauna and plunge pools all year round.
From rustic eats to fine dining, Girona is a gastronomic city through and through. For a sweet treat, visit the many bakeries of the city and order xuixo - a sweet pastry that is filled with cream, deep fried, and covered in sugar. And for something more substantial, try some classic or contemporary Catalan dishes in many of the city’s restaurants.
With an Avis rental car, you’re completely free to travel around Girona and beyond at your leisure.
