Rent a car on Formentera
Our Formentera car rental service is easily found in the north of the island at Puerto de la Savina, where our friendly team will check you in quickly and efficiently so you can get on with enjoying your holiday on one of Spain’s most beautiful islands.
The smallest of the Balearic Islands, Formentera has a long history. For thousands of years it endured successive invasions and occupations, and this is reflected in the island’s culture, architecture and cuisine. Today, you’re more likely to meet artists, musicians and sun-worshippers here than Visigoths or Byzantines. Since the 1960s, the island has been a popular destination for celebrities, and has developed a reputation as the laid-back little sister of the party island of Ibiza.

Exploring Formentera
The pristine white beaches, turquoise waters and laid-back vibe of Formentera have made the island a frequent feature in novels and films, and a favourite spot for creative types. La Mola Lighthouse, perched on a high cliff with yawning views, provides the setting for part of Jules Verne’s Hector Servadac, and Bob Dylan once lived in the Cap de Barbaria. For these reasons, the island is home to a number of hippie craft markets selling handmade trinkets, bohemian clothing and leather goods.
The main island is just 19km long and is ideal to explore by car. For 7km along the island’s south coast, the sandy beaches and bays of Playa de Migjorn are largely untouched but for a handful of sun loungers, hotels and restaurants. Here, even in summer, you can find a stretch of beach to make your own.
But locals will tell you the best beach on the island is found on the opposite side of Formentera. The gorgeous Ses Illetes, which has stubbornly resisted development, looks out onto the bright blue-green waters of Las Salinas Natural Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Due to its tranquillity, fine white sand and clear waters, Ses Illetes is often compared to the beaches of the Caribbean.
There is much more to see on the island than its beaches. There are charming narrow streets and the beautiful church of San Francisco in the serene Sant Francesc Xavier, Formentera’s capital. There are also bars and restaurants, where the influence of different cultures can be seen in the distinct cuisine. Fish is an important ingredient of Formentera’s cuisine, and salad payesa, containing the dried salted fish eaten by the Phoenicians, is a classic island dish. The islanders also produce a range of delicious wines and spirits, as well as fragrant herbal liqueurs such as frígola.
If partying is more your thing, the busier village of Es Pujols has a lively nightlife with its late-night restaurants and bars, and a fun and friendly atmosphere that lasts until long past midnight. It’s sure to give you a fresh appetite for another day of relaxation and exploration on this tranquil island. Hire a car with Avis in Formentera to discover its hidden coves, charming white-washed villages and stunning natural beauty.
