The people of Figueres are proud that surrealist artist Salvador Dali is a native of the city and chose to live here for most of his life. To discover more about the artist, visit the Dali Theatre and Museum. Dali designed the museum and even lived there. It’s impossible to miss with the giant eggs perched on its roof. The fisherman’s hut that Dali extended and lived in from 1930 until 1982 is also nearby.
The Sant Ferran Castle is another must-visit in the city. Built in the mid-18th century, it’s one of the largest fortresses in Europe. During its height, it could support 6,000 troops during battle.
Figueres is also the perfect spot to enjoy traditional Catalan cuisine. Be sure to order local classics such as oxtail soup, seafood paella, gazpacho, and butifarra, a special type of spiced sausage.
