Plan your journey from Barcelona Sants Train Station
Barcelona’s most iconic piece of architecture, La Sagrada Familia, tops the sightseeing list. This unfinished 19th century church (designed by famous architect Antoni Gaudi) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
Another Gaudi gem not to be missed is Park Güell. Besides the incredible artistic designs on display here, this modernist park (another UNESCO site) is perched on Carmel Hill with breathtaking views over the city.
Wander along the charming tree-lined street of Las Ramblas from Plaça de Catalunya to the Port Vell harbour and keep an eye out for street performers. Take in the fascinating gothic quarter, Barrio Gotico, where a host of ancient churches, Roman walls and cultural sites lie, such as the Barcelona City History Museum.
Also be sure to visit El Born – the city’s medieval district and the home of the Picasso Museum. The output of the renowned artist’s early years in Barcelona can be viewed here, along with some of his lesser known sketches and paintings.
After dark, head out to see the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc show – a huge water display illuminated in time to music.
Anywhere you wish to go in Barcelona and beyond is just a relaxing drive away in your Avis rental car.
Beyond Barcelona
From a picturesque coastline to magnificent mountains, diverse landscapes and sights are waiting to be explored on scenic drives beyond Barcelona.
Costa Brava coast
Dotted with beautiful beaches, rugged cliffs, archaeological sites, top resorts and quaint seaside towns, the Costa Brava coastline is perfect for a scenic road trip. At just over an hour's drive from Barcelona, it couldn’t be easier to reach. While major resorts, such as Lloret de Mar, provide an abundance of activities for visitors of all ages, more traditional fishing villages settled further up the coast provide a quieter escape.
Locals flock to the little town of Begur for the charming beach scenery and delicious food and wine. Other top spots include Tossa de Mar’s old town – the only surviving walled city on the Catalan coast, and the Portlligat Museum-House in Cadaqués, where it’s possible to gain an insight into the life and work of renowned artist Salvador Dali at his 1930s summer house.
Montserrat Mountains
Besides the stunning landscapes, there’s another reason to drive out to the Montserrat Mountains, towering 45km west of Barcelona … The Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey stands here.
This Benedictine monastery houses a museum featuring world-famous sculptures, art and archaeological artefacts, alongside information on the landmark’s intriguing past. This is also a superb place for breathtaking views over Catalonia.
All this and more is easily reached with your Avis rental car. Embrace the freedom to just drive in this beautiful part of Spain.
