Târgu Jiu

Picturesquely located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, just under a two-hour drive from Craiova, the city of Târgu Jiu is a former Roman settlement famous for sculptures by Constantin Brâncusi – one of the most influential modern artists of the 20th century. Jitianu Monastery

Situated around 8km outside of Craiova city centre, the Jituanu Monastery was built in the 17th century on the site of an ancient temple. First inhabited by monks, nuns later resided here. This church also provided protection for various armies throughout the centuries. Today, the monastery holds an impressive collection of medieval art and artefacts that are accessible to the public.
