Beyond Rzeszów Airport
Poland’s Podkarpackie Province boasts a mountainous landscape affording stunning drives and worthwhile stops on a road trip across the country.
Jarosław
The tiny town of Jarosław is a 48-minute drive from Rzeszów via Droga Krajowa. It was once an important trade centre and port on the San river, but now its main draws are its historic buildings. While here, visit the Collegiate Church of the Corpus Christi, which features Renaissance design. The Krakow Gate and its ancient fortifications are located in the oldest part of the city, as is the Main Square, which is surrounded by beautiful architecture.
Przemyśl
From Rzeszów you can reach Przemyśl in just over an hour. While Jarosław features many Renaissance buildings, Przemyśl offers a mixture of styles. Rynek Główny is the town’s medieval market square and there are many baroque churches in the vicinity, as well as a Renaissance castle on the San river. Stop by the reformed Franciscan monastery or one of the museums in the Old Town. The National Museum Branch in Przemyśl is a top attraction.
Magura National Park
Magura National Park is in the Beskid mountains, well known for its ‘Devil Stone’ attraction and the Kornuty nature reserve. The focal point is Magura Watkowska, a large massif. Its highest peak is the stunning Watkowa, which stands at 847 metres tall. The park can be reached in under two hours from Rzeszów on the DK19/E37.
Poland’s Podkarpacie Province is worth exploring and an Avis rental from Rzeszów Airport gives you the freedom to see it all at your own pace.
Plan your journey from Rzeszów Airport
Rzeszów, the capital of Poland’s Podkarpacie region, has been a European meeting point for nearly 700 years. You can reach Rzeszów from the airport in under 15 minutes by car (via Lubelska). Although a lot has changed here over the years, the city has managed to hold on to its cultural and historical heritage.
Rzeszów is a vibrant university city. Of its 170,000 residents, nearly one third are students. This is reflected in the lively, youthful atmosphere of the city. Still, its interior is quiet and humble. Much of Rzeszów’s architecture was destroyed during the world wars, but its Old Town is still well worth a visit.
Rzeszów is famous for its silver jewellery and the town abounds with local artisans. Walk into any gallery or artisan shop and you’ll find silverworks, paintings and sculptures for sale. The glass pieces are all made according to the traditional designs of the 19th century. Wicker, wood, clay and textiles are also popular materials.
For a true taste of culture, sample some of the local fare. Most restaurants in town serve traditional dishes based on old recipes and use local produce. White and smoked cheeses made with goat’s and sheep’s milk are most famous, as well as sausages, smoked bacon, proziaki (pancakes), whey soup and cabbage dumplings. The local bread is made using a unique method. It’s baked either in cabbage or horseradish leaves.
