Plan your journey from Rotterdam Airport
Rotterdam Airport is just a 15-minute drive from Rotterdam. Almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War, much of Rotterdam’s historic buildings no longer exist, but the city has planted itself firmly in the modern age and is considered Netherland’s second city.
High-rise buildings now dominate the skyline, though much of the city retains a typical Dutch look and feel. The district of Delfshaven is one of the few that survived the war and its quaint canal-side streets are a lovely place to enjoy an afternoon stroll. This was once the seaport of the city of Delft, which is just over a 20-minute drive from Rotterdam, and is also worth a visit. The home of the famous painter, Vermeer, Delft’s star attraction is the Nieuwe Kerk church tower.
At the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinderdijk, on the outskirts of Rotterdam, 19 windmills dating back to the 18th century sit alongside a canal, all kept in full working condition. The Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and Kunsthal exhibition space are top attractions for culture enthusiasts, while Het Park offers an escape from the bustle of the city.
Beyond Rotterdam
Rotterdam sits in the centre of Netherlands, making it the perfect base to explore all that the country and its neighbours have to offer.
Antwerp
Antwerp may be Belgium’s second largest city, but it’s still very small. Don’t let size put you off though – it has plenty to see and do. The city’s architecture is one of its main draws, with its neo-gothic central train station and the gothic Cathedral of Our Lady being prime examples. With 80% of the world’s diamonds traded in this city, a trip down Hoveniersstraat or Schupstraat will plant you in the heart of the trading district. The medieval fortress, Het Steen, is also a must-see.
Amsterdam
The famous canals alone are enough of a reason to visit Amsterdam, but there’s much more to this laid-back and lively European capital. Walking through the busy streets near the city’s main train station, you’ll pass all manner of shops, cafes and bakeries. The beautiful Vondelpark is best explored on bike – the locals’ preferred method of transport. The Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are two of the city’s most popular attractions. From Rotterdam, Amsterdam is just a 55-minute drive via the E19.
Brussels
With its historic monuments, architectural diversity, international cuisine, trendy bars and fashion studios, Brussels has much to offer. The Grand Palace and the Old England Building impress visitors with their stunning architecture, while the Royal Museums of Art and History draw culture and history lovers with a fine collection of ancient artefacts from around the world. Brussels is easily reached in under two hours from Rotterdam on the E19.
Your Avis hire car will effortlessly transport you between destinations. All you need to do is accelerate away.
