Howth

Drive for around 50 minutes from Dublin City Centre (via the M50) to visit the pretty village of Howth. Topping the attractions is Howth Castle. Built around 1564, it has been transformed into private housing, but the extensive grounds are still open to the public. Take a look at the National Transport Museum, which features a Hill of Howth Electric Tram, double-decker buses and a selection of fire engines. To stretch your legs, walk up to Howth Summit, which provides fantastic views and an old lighthouse to explore.

Glendalough

From Dublin City Centre (via the M50 and R755), it’s about an hour’s drive to County Wicklow and the Glendalough Monastic City. Aside from its stunning setting within Wicklow’s spectacular countryside, Glendalough is a fascinating sight dating back to the 6th century. It was founded by Saint Cóemgen of Glendalough and has survived various Viking attacks during its turbulent history. There’s an interactive visitor centre close to the sight with audio visual displays and a scale model.

Families will enjoy a trip to the Museum of Natural History, which features an array of weird and wonderful objects, including skeletons, stuffed animals and fossils from around the world.

When the sun sets head to the lively Temple Bar neighbourhood, which has a large selection of bars, pubs and restaurants. Most have live bands playing traditional Irish music and more modern varieties till the early hours.
