Plan your journey from Reykjavik Keflavik Airport
After a 40-minute drive on Route 41, you’ll arrive in Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik. Although a small city, it’s constantly full of surprises. A good place to start is Hallgrimskirkja church, Reykjavik’s towering landmark building. Its unique architectural design was inspired by lava cooling into basalt rock. For a small fee, take the elevator to the top of the tower for a perfect 360-degree view of the city.
Another noteworthy architectural feat in Reykjavik is the striking Harpa, the city’s concert hall and conference centre. Check to see what events are happening during your visit or come to admire the building for its award-winning design. Also, be sure to stop by the Sun Voyager, a giant steel sculpture on the waterfront resembling a Viking ship. Jón Gunnar Árnason created this piece of artwork.
Experiencing Iceland’s quirky culture through its unusual cuisine is a must-do. Be sure to try the hakarl, which is fermented shark and is often considered to be Iceland’s traditional dish. Small game, usually seabirds such as Puffin, are also common on menus here.
There’s so much to explore in Reykjavik. Just pick up your Avis hire car at Reykjavík–Keflavík Airport and drive.
