The beach of Agios Stefanos is a must-visit, with calm, crystal-clear water. And before you leave, drive to the Kos Olive Oil Bottling Factory in the town and take home a bottle of the local produce. Only 17km away from Kos Airport, Kefalos is a great place to spend a day relaxing in the sunshine.

Greece is famous for its illustrious history and it’s possible to get a real sense of centuries passed in the town of Kos. Jutting out over the harbour, you’ll see Castle Neratzia (also known as the Castle of the Knights), a sea fortress that dates back to the 14th century. A once impenetrable and defensive structure, the castle has survived attacks by the Turks and the Ottomans and is sure to impress all history buffs.

After a huge earthquake in the 1930s, Kos was reduced mostly to rubble. The town was rebuilt, but the natural disaster uncovered ruins from the Roman, Hellenistic, and Byzantine periods. On the western side of town, you can explore excavation sites that hold treasures such as 3rd century mosaics and a former Hellenistic gymnasium.

As well as a fascinating history, the town of Kos is also home to impressive natural sites such as the Hippocrates Plane Tree. At 2,500 years old, it’s the oldest tree in Europe, and rumour has it that Hippocrates planted it himself.
