The second largest of the Dodecanese islands, after Rhodes, Karpathos gives you a real taste of authentic Greek life. Hire a car to explore the island and you'll get access to quiet beaches, traditional mountain villages and picturesque pine forests.

The uninhabited neighbouring island of Saria makes for a great day trip. You can catch a boat from the town of Darfini and enjoy a day of hiking, swimming and snorkelling.

Over on the west coast of Karpathos is the impressive Acropolis of Arkasa, whose ruins look out over the sparkling Aegean Sea.
