Beyond Tours
From Tours, get behind the wheel of your Avis hire car and start exploring the Loire Valley.
Rigny-Ussé
Rigny-Ussé in the Loire Valley is located 45 minutes from Tours via the D7. The star attraction here is Ussé Castle. Set against the lush Chinon forest, it’s completely white facade is the stuff of fairy tales. Apparently this is the castle that Charles Perrault had in mind when he wrote Sleeping Beauty. When you see it, you’ll know why.
Villandry
Take the D7 from Tours and after just 22 minutes you’ll arrive in Villandry. This is where the Château de Villandry is located, which is the town’s main draw. It was built in the 14th century, but it was restored in 1906 to include one of the most beautiful Renaissance gardens in Europe. Like almost everything else in the stunning Loire Valley, it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Chenonceau
Drive the D140 from Tours to Chenonceau – easily one of the most memorable spots in France. This small village is home to a château that’s also a bridge, spanning the Cher river. The architecture on show here is gothic and Renaissance, making it a striking destination. Be sure to wander around the château’s impeccable gardens while you’re here.
