Plan your journey from Surgeres Train Station
Once you’ve collected your Avis hire car at the Surgeres Train Station, you’ll already be in central Surgeres. This picturesque city has a history dating back to Neolithic times, and really flourished in the Middle Ages when a stone defence was built here to protect against Norman invasion.
Life in Surgeres is concentrated on its central square. Here, there are a couple of streets with plentiful shops, including bakeries, cafes and boutiques. The town’s ancient castle is the most impressive feature: you can enter it from the Porche tower that originally had a drawbridge. Walk straight through into the garden area with its many historic buildings, including a Roman-style church. Be sure to take a look at its intricately carved clock tower.
Another historical point of interest is the 17th century Château de Surgeres, a manor house that retains some of the remains of the original castle built on the site, such as the tower and parts of the ramparts. There’s also a beautiful walled garden here where you can relax with a picnic.

Fouras
Fouras is a beach town located around 30 minutes’ drive from Surgeres via D911. It’s both a traditional small French town and the location of some high-end resorts. When you’ve had your fill of sun, sand and sea, the town centre has many cafes and fine dining options.
Marans
Marans is a 30-minute drive from Surgeres on the D115 and D114. If you’re a horticulture fan, Marans is for you. The Town Hall Garden has been awarded ‘Four Flowers’ by the national Village Fleuri association, but there are numerous other pretty parks and gardens to relax in too. The main attraction, however, is the river port, filled with boats and yachts. You can walk along here, or explore the canals of the Marais Poitevin, a large area of lush marshland.
Saint-Jean d’Angely
Although Saint-Jean d’Angely tends to be off the tourist track, it has plenty to offer its visitors. To get here from Surgeres, drive for 25 minutes on the D939.
