Just a 20-minute drive from the airport, you’ll arrive in the fascinating city of Nîmes. Nowhere else in France is so famous for its Roman influence, with a host of ruins from Roman times spread around the city. In fact, here you’ll find some of the most extensive Roman remains in Europe, outside of Rome itself.

The Les Arenas amphitheatre, built in 100AD, is a must-see, as is the Maison Carré temple. As well as its Roman past, Nîmes (once known as de Nîmes) is also famous for its history of denim. This city developed the material and exported it to the south of the US in the 19th century.

Today, Nîmes is still a busy commercial hub, and has an array of museums, markets and festivals to keep visitors entertained year-round. The Carré d’Art is a striking, modern building that houses the city’s library and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which has exhibitions featuring works from the 1960s until now.

For gastronomy, you won’t be disappointed in Nîmes. Head to the famous Les Halles food market where you can pick up a selection of local delicacies, or book a table in one of the city’s many restaurants.
