For a sense of Auxerre in ancient times, visit the Abbey of St Germain, a Benedictine monastery from the 5th century, with 9th century frescoes preserved in the crypt. At Les Caves Billy Lapiere, you’ll find an historic cave that was used to conceal wine from the Nazis in the Second World War.
