Perpignan is the capital of the Pyrénées-Orientales department, and, at less than two hours from Montpellier, it is the perfect springboard for exploring Northern Catalonia in France. The Palace of the Kings of Majorca dates back to the 13th century and offers an impressive vantage point of the snow-capped Pyrenees. Be sure to check out the Arab and Romany quarter where you can purchase freshly made baklava and sip on north African coffee.

Sète
The closest sea port to Montpellier, Sète, is just 45 minutes away with your hire car from Montpellier Airport. With 35km of unspoilt beach, this is the place for sandcastle building and evening beach strolls. Home to oyster and mussel beds, Sète is also an ideal spot for a fresh seafood dinner. And as this town is a real working port, you'll get an authentic sense of what working life in the region is really like on your trip.
