Dunkirk

Military history lovers should make their way to Dunkirk, just a 50-minute leisurely drive from Calais along the A16. The Memorial de Souvenir provides a fascinating insight into the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, with artefacts from the period and a 12-minute educational film. Spend time on the beach where 300,000 Allied troops were evacuated. The Musée Portuaire is the perfect place to grasp a broad overview of the local maritime history.

Ostend

Drive a little further east and you’ll find yourself in the Belgian town of Ostend. Driemaster Mercator is a must-see floating maritime museum, formerly a Belgian marine training ship. For history that stretches even further back, visit the De Ploate Oostende Historical Museum – a building that exhibits ancient artefacts from the Neolithic and Roman periods.
