Plan your journey from Arras Train Station
Take advantage of the sights at your feet and start your adventure by exploring Arras’ ancient market square – the Grand Place.
While this spacious area is filled to the brim with stalls on market days (Wednesday and Saturday mornings), there’s plenty to see every day of the week.
Dominating Arras’ skyline is the bell tower. Climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views over the square and city. Look out for the distinctive baroque houses with a distinctly Flemish feel. This style of architecture is also evident in the city’s other main square, the Place des Héros.
Located underneath the city are numerous hidden tunnels and chambers that were formed when stone quarries were dug out around the 10th century. These were later used as air-raid shelters during World War I and II. Guided tours are available around these intriguing passages (known as Les Boves). A more specific attraction concentrates on the Wellington Quarry. This is a series of underground tunnels where troops were rallied ahead of the Battle of Arras in 1917.
Arras has a number of interesting museums to explore too. For beautiful sculptures and paintings, head to the Museum of Fine Arts, located in the ancient and atmospheric Abbey of St Vaast.
After discovering these gems, it’s time to start your tour beyond the city limits of Arras. With your rental car, the countryside is yours.
