The city centre is about a 15-minute drive from Pula Airport via Sijanska cesta. While it’s not as lively as bigger Croatian cities like Dubrovnik and Split, there’s still a lot on offer for visitors. The city was part of Italy until the end of World War II. Today, Italian and English are often spoken by locals.

Pula has also preserved much of its history, including Roman ruins and other archaeological sites. The city’s star attraction is its 6th century Roman amphitheatre, which is known as the Arena. Gladiatorial contests were held here, and there is enough seating for 20,000 onlookers. The main city square, called the Forum after its Roman origins, is also a must-see, and is where the Temple of Augustus is located.

More modern structures, like the Austro-Hungarian fortresses, built before World War I, can also be found scattered around the city. Another top sight is a series of underground tunnels, called Zerostrassse, which was used to store ammunition and as bomb shelters for the local population during World War I.

Stroll the streets and browse the shops in Pula for some retail therapy, and take in some of the city’s museums, like the Archaeological Museum, which has exhibitions dating from prehistoric times to the middle ages.

A 40-minute drive north of Pula on the D21 takes you to another beautiful coastal town, Rovinj. Built on a peninsula, the town is easily identified by its huge tower, a part of the Church of St Euphemia, which stretches 60 metres into the sky. The old town is particularly charming with its red-roofed houses, and the Forest Park Golden Cape, an area of outstanding natural beauty, which sits on the town’s edge. Fresh fish are brought in daily by local fishermen and feature on the menus of many of Rovinj’s restaurants.

Poreč
The town of Poreč boasts a number of historic sites, including the 6th century Euphrasian Basilica, a Unesco World Heritage Site, and the Bishop’s Palace, sitting adjacent. Visitors should stop in at the Heritage Museum of Poreč, housed in the Sinčić Palace, and also see the nearby Baredine Cave, featuring bizarre stalagmites. Located about an hour north of Pula on the E751, it’s a fantastic day trip destination.
