Discovered by Christopher Columbus, Tortola became an English holding in the late 16th century. A plantation colony, it emerged as a hub for sugar harvesting and slavery from Africa. The island turned to tourism once agriculture became less profitable.

The island’s main draw is its idyllic beaches, but for keen sightseers, there’s much to see. The Dungeon and the Salt Island Graves are two artefacts found on Tortola. Art lovers will appreciate Aragorn’s Studio, which started as a single workshop for the local metal sculptor Aragorn Dick-Read, but has since expanded to become a quaint arts centre. Full moon parties, which are family-friendly events, also take place here.

The island has postcard-white sand beaches, especially along the northern shores. Head to Cane Garden Bay for a swim and Josiah’s Bay for surfing. Or why not rent a yacht to explore the open sea. Naturally, the island boasts exceptional snorkelling and diving.

Adventure seekers might prefer hiking through the rainforests of the Sage Mountain National Park, where you’ll also see bat caves which house some of the island’s wildlife.

Cane Garden Bay

A quick 10-minute drive on Ridge Road will take you to the once sleepy town of Cane Garden Bay on the island’s northern coast. This popular beach has great food and nightlife, with live music often played in its many restaurants. The atmosphere remains remarkably relaxed. Snorkelling and sailing are also popular activities here.

Apple Bay

Drive 15 minutes south of Road Town and stop at this scenic little alcove nestled on the shore. Either grab a surf board and test out the water or stake out a spot at one of the seaside cafes to watch the pros ride the waves.

Mount Sage National Park

Just a 15-minute drive west of Road Town along Ridge Road, this volcanic peak provides hikers with beautiful views and lush forests to explore. Spread across 96 acres, there are 12 trails here, which allow you to explore the local flora and fauna, including many varieties of birds.
