Plan your journey from E.T. Joshua Airport
Once you have your Avis rental car from E.T. Joshua Airport, everything on St. Vincent and the Grenadines is within easy driving distance. The capital city of Kingstown is just a nine-minute drive via Richmond Hill Road, and its beautiful harbour, rolling hills, and cobbled streets all make for a truly pleasant destination.
Although it's the capital city, Kingstown has a population of just 25,000. French settlers originally founded it, and although the British also ruled the island for a short time, all around Kingstown you’ll notice various remnants of French heritage. Go to Bay Street to see the city’s 18th century buildings, including the Georgian-style architecture.
The St Vincent and the Grenadines Botanical Gardens is Kingstown’s most coveted attraction, and is one of the oldest in the western hemisphere. It was established in 1765, and features a descendant of the original breadfruit tree that was brought to the island by Captain William Bligh from Tahiti in 1793.
Visit the Kingstown Produce Market for fresh, local fare, and pick up some souvenirs. Grenadines Wharf is another excellent place to go for restaurants and shopping.

Beyond E.T. Joshua Airport
Although small in size, St. Vincent and the Geradines are teeming with things to see and do. From Kingston, the island’s main sights are all within an hour’s drive.
Buccament Bay
On the sheltered side of the island is Buccament Bay, under a 20-minute drive via Leeward Highway from Kingstown. This region is rife with pristine beaches, many of which feature striking black sand - something the island is famous for. Buccament Bay is a great place to spend the day relaxing in the sun, but Mount Wynne, Petit Byahaut, Richmond Bay, and Cumberland Bay are all situated nearby too, offering sensational swimming spots.
Fort Charlotte
Located in the lovely Clare Valley, Fort Charlotte is under 10 minutes’ drive from Kingstown via Grenville Street and Edinboro Road. This historic fort has the best views overlooking Kingstown, situated 600 feet above the bay. It was constructed in 1806 and housed more than 600 when used as a military defence. There are still 30 canons in the battery, and a small museum onsite.
Wallibou
Wallibou is a one-hour drive from Kingstown via Leeward Highway. This beautiful area has been used as the set of films like Pirates of the Caribbean, and it’s full of natural wonders. While there is not one specific town here, there’s a pretty black-sand beach, a few small boat docks, and many sheltered moorings. A natural stone arch marks the entrance of the bay, and the waters around the Wallibou area are perfect for snorkelling. Be sure to sample local dishes and dine on the fresh seafood while you’re here.
St.Vincent and the Grenadines is a humble island with a big heart. From the comfort of your Avis rental car, the island is yours to discover at your leisure.
