At 22km long and 18km wide, the island of Antigua is the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands and offers a host of attractions. Drive along the coastal roads or head inland and you’ll soon see why this is one of the most popular spots in the Caribbean.
Nelson’s Dockyard
From St John’s, drive south along All Saints Road for 30 minutes and arrive at the cultural heritage site of Nelson's Dockyard. The Dockyard Museum is situated in the old naval officers’ residence, where you can explore the fascinating maritime exhibits on display, including a telescope used by Lord Nelson during the Napoleonic Wars.
Jolly Harbour Beach
South from St John’s, Jolly Harbour Beach is 10km away along Valley Road. This is a popular spot with the locals, who come to enjoy the white sand and crystal-clear water. Snorkeling, diving and sailing are available here, and there are also a number of excellent restaurants, bars and shops in the area, as well as an 18-hole golf course.
With so much to see and do in Antigua, you’re sure to enjoy your tropical escape. All you have to do is drive.
Plan your route from V.C. Bird International Airport
Just an 8km drive from V.C. Bird International Airport is the lively city of St John’s, the capital of Antigua.
At the heart of the island, here you can enjoy traditional Caribbean cuisine at one of the many cafes and restaurants, or explore the shops and street markets that are alive with the colours and aromas of the island.
The city’s most iconic landmark is the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, which is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and Baroque design. The original structure has been fully restored and now boasts two stone towers that are prominent features in the city’s skyline.
On Friday and Saturday mornings, head to the St John’s indoor market where you can sample the local produce, including fresh mangos, sugared apples and tamarind pods. Don’t leave without trying a black pineapple, which the island is famous for producing.
And to experience the local culture, delve into the island’s fascinating history at the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, which is housed in the 1747 colonial Court House, the oldest building still in use on the island.
St John’s is a city you’ll be talking about for many years to come.
