Choosing your route

There are many routes that you can follow in the Outback but Birdsville Track, Gibb River Road and Corner County are the most popular amongst travellers.

Gibb River Road can only be travelled using a 4 x 4 vehicle and it offers spectacular landscape as you drive through the Kimberley region and arrive at the sea near Derby. Corner Country gives drivers the opportunity to visit Cameron corner, an area where South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales meet.

You can decide to take one of the routes described above or go it alone and navigate your own way through the vast expanses of the Australian Outback. The country’s oldest region and home of arguably its most famous city, state capital Sydney, New South Wales has something for everyone. Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge will take you over three hours, but it’s well worth the effort for the view over the city. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, try the magnificent Sydney Opera House, the Taronga Park Zoo, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the historic The Rocks district. Away from the city you can take even more advantage of your car rental and drive through the lush green pastures of the Hunter Valley Wine Country. The area offers great accommodation, excellent cuisine, golf courses and a variety of thrill-seeking opportunities. There’s a wealth of adventure available for all visitors to this, the largest state. Relax and enjoy soft, white sandy beaches in an incredible sunny climate: Perth, the state capital, basks in more hours of sunshine per year than any other city in Australia.

If you’re after somewhere slightly cooler, try the Margaret River wine-growing region in the south-western part of the state.
