Plan your journey from Udon Thani Airport
Udon Thani (Udon for short) is just 15 minutes from Udon Thani Airport on Route 210. Unlike many of Thailand’s major cities, Udon is surprisingly modern and very much westernised. You don’t have to go far to find popular chain restaurants and shops.
During the Vietnam War, the Thai and US Governments built a military base in Udon that resulted in an influx of Vietnamese immigrants and American soldiers. Nowadays, Udon is beautifully diverse. You can learn more about this part of the city’s history at the Udon Thani Provincial Museum, which is housed in what was once the royal residence of Queen Rampai Panni.
Spend some time at Nong Prajak Park, a peaceful recreational area where many locals come to relax, jog, or picnic. When it comes to dining, Udon has plenty of choices, ranging from local speciality dishes to international cuisine. Many restaurants are open-air and garden-style, and serve Isan and typical Thai dishes, like hot pots. If you’re craving western food, head to the area around the Charoensri Complex.
When it comes to shopping, Udon is well known for its hand-woven silk, and its diamond-shaped patterned textiles. Visit one of the many marketplaces around the city, such as the one found in Na Kha, and you can watch local artisans at work on their crafts.
