Plan your journey from Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is just over an hour from the centre of Kuala Lumpur itself, via Route 29 and MEX/E20. While this is a huge, sprawling city bustling with activity, Kuala Lumpur is easy to navigate and the locals are extremely welcoming and hospitable.
The city’s masterpieces are the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. These 88-storey buildings are identical and joined with a double-decker Sky Bridge. Alternatively head to the top of the KL Tower, which stands at 421 metres, where you can get 360-degree views of the city from the observation deck.
Chinatown is one of the most well-known and colourful districts in the city, and is filled with shopping bargains. The KLCC and Bukit Bintang neighbourhoods are the most popular in the area, and well worth a visit. Families can enjoy a day at the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, complete with waterslides, a man-made river, and a surf beach.
To sample the local cuisine, the neighbourhood of Jalan Alor is the place to go. With its Chinese seafood restaurants, hawker stalls, and endless barbecue treats, it's easy to spend hours here feasting on all the delights on offer. Don’t forget to try some noodles and local desserts.
Kuala Lumpur is guaranteed to surprise you, and from the comfort of a hire car, you can see it all.

Beyond Kuala Lumpur International Airport
From cave temples to historic towns and fun-filled resorts, Malaysia has a wealth of sights and activities to explore beyond Kuala Lumpur.
Malacca
Historic Malacca is just under two hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur via North-South Expy/E2. This port city was a centre for trade between the East and West in times gone by, and is now a Unesco World Heritage City. Some of the best highlights include St Paul’s Hill, which is topped by a pretty church, the Stadthuys – also known as the Red Square - and the Portuguese fortress, A Famosa. Be sure to visit Cheng Hoon Teng, Malaysia’s oldest functioning Chinese temple.
Batu Caves
The famous Batu Caves are a 40-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur on Route 1. The Batu Cave Hindu temple is a massive limestone outcrop, and its interior is lined with deities. Don’t miss the huge golden Murugan statue at the site’s entrance, and the chances are some monkeys will be hanging around the temple to greet you.
Genting Highlands
Drive 60 minutes on Karak Expy/E8 from Kuala Lumpur and arrive in the Genting Highlands. This hill resort is a perfect place for people of all ages, and has a gaming casino plus indoor and outdoor theme parks with roller coasters, splash pools, and 4D cinemas. You can also ride south-east Asia’s fastest and longest cable car here.
Malaysia is worth discovering. With an Avis rental, it’s easy - all you have to do is drive.
