Ubud

Regarded as Bali's cultural heart, the city of Ubud boasts many attractions. Popular activities include taking a bike tour through the bamboo forest and visiting historic landmarks, such as the Puri Saren Palace and the Pura Puseh Batuan Temple. There are also a number of fascinating museums here, like the Neka Art Museum and Blanco Renaissance Museum.

Be sure to explore this city's beautiful surroundings, dotted with rice paddies and unique villages; scenic drives aplenty are guaranteed. Ubud is around an hour north from Denpasar City.

Tanah Lot Temples

Situated on a rock formation just off the coast of Bali, the temple of Tanah Lot is a popular day trip destination. Created by a Hindu priest during the 15th century, this is considered to be an important spiritual site, even though much of it has been reconstructed over the years. While non-Balinese are not allowed to enter the temple, visitors can still walk across the seabed at low tide to take a look.

There are also a number of other shrines located in the area, including the Batu Mejan Temple and the Batu Bolong Temple. The latter is also set on a rock stretching out into the sea. The temples of Tanah Lot are reachable from Denpasar City within an hour’s drive.

A leisurely 40-minute drive from the airport leads to Denpasar City – the capital of Bali. Lively, bustling and full of culture, this city is quite different to the idyllic scenes of beaches that Bali is most associated with. Instead, you’ll find intriguing museums, temples, monuments, bustling markets and a great choice of restaurants. This vibrant, pulsing centre provides the perfect base from which to explore the country by car.

Start by delving into the local history at the Bali Museum. Set across four pavilions, there are various collections concentrating on different cultural elements and periods, ranging from ancient times through to modern day. Archaeological finds, sculptures, paintings, textiles and performing arts are the main themes.

The city’s temples are its star attractions, and none more so than the Royal Temples, situated in the grounds of the Palace of Satria. If you want to indulge in retail therapy, there are an abundance of shops and markets in the city to choose from. For handicrafts, fresh food and spices, head to the Pasar Badung, the country’s largest food market.

The Kereneng Night Market is also well worth visiting; at sunset, an array of authentic Indonesian cuisine is temptingly laid out and locals and tourists congregate here to eat. Also, be sure to keep an eye out for small shops selling luxurious wares such as gold and Duta silk.
