New Delhi is a 20-minute drive via Sardar Patel Marg from New Delhi Airport. With its temples, bazaars, museums and empirical highlights, you’ll need to spend a good few days in this city to really get to know it.
Start at the 42-metre high India Gate, the centrepiece of Delhi, surrounded by lush gardens and plentiful picnic spots. Move on to the Red Fort in Old Delhi, one of the best Mughal monuments in town. The fort has 2km of walls surrounding it, built in the 1600s. There’s also the Qutab Minar, the world’s tallest brick minaret standing at 73 metres high.
Chandni Chowk is the place to really experience the hectic nature of this buzzing city. This main street in Old Delhi is overflowing with jewellery, clothing and electronic stores. Here you can also sample delicious Indian street food. Take your pick from all the stalls. Khan Market is another bazaar well worth visiting. Walk Paranthe Wali Gali or sample flat breads stuffed with everything imaginable. For more Delhi culture, visit the Crafts Museum or the National Gallery of Modern Art.
To see some of the city’s lesser-known parts, visit Lodi Gardens at dusk, listen to Islamic devotional singing at Nizamuddin, or visit the great fort of Purana Qila.
