Bandar Seri Begawan is a 20-minute drive from Brunei International Airport via Lebuhraya Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Downtown Bandar is very compact and most of the city’s main attractions can be found here.Visiting the free Royal Regalia Museum is a must. Displaying gifts that the Sultan has received from heads of states around the world, it’s a great place to learn about Brunei’s history and its international influence. Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is another top attraction, and at 44 metres tall, it’s the highest building in downtown Bandar. Non-Muslims are allowed to enter when it isn’t prayer time.
To experience a unique market, head to Tamu Kianggeh on the Brunei river. Here, a vast range of fresh fruits and vegetables are sold, as well as pre-made lunches – perfect for picnics in Tasek Lama Recreational Park. Walking along the waterfront is also a great way to spend an afternoon. There’s a lovely promenade overlooking the river to Kampong Ayer, the world’s largest stilt village. Half a century ago, half of Brunei’s population lived here. Today it’s still home to 20,000 people. It even has its own schools, mosques and fire brigade.

Beyond Brunei International Airport
Bandar Seri Begawan is surrounded by natural beauty and small oil towns.Ulu Temburong National Park
Ulu Temburong National Park is just under a two-hour drive from Bandar via Jalan Kuala Lurah/AH150. Nestled in the middle of a vast rainforest on the Temburong and Belalong rivers, 50,000 hectares await you. The park is practically untouched. Visitors are only admitted through guided tours. Walk above the tree canopies, swim in clear pools and spot an array of wildlife including birds, butterflies and gibbons.
Seria
Brunei’s economy largely depends on its oil and many of its towns rely on this resource. For visitors, Seria offers a fascinating insight into the country’s oil industry. Just over an hour from Bandar via the Muara–Tutong Highway, Seria has an Oil and Gas Discovery Centre that not only educates, but also greatly entertains. Budding young scientists will be enthralled. Be sure to also see the Billionth Barrel Monument, which – as the name suggests – celebrates the billionth barrel of oil produced here. This milestone was achieved in 1991.
Lambir Hills National Park
Lambir Hills National Park is just over a two-hour drive from Bandar and well worth the trip. This place is famous for its numerous waterfalls and its main pool of crystal clear water even boasts a big sandy beach. The entire park is in the middle of the jungle, so you never know when you might stumble upon local wildlife such as monkeys.
Brunei is yours to discover. All you have to do is drive.
