Plan your journey from Randburg
Johannesburg is just a 20-minute drive from Randburg via Bram Fischer Drive and 5th Street. This huge, sprawling city has a wealth of things to see and do, so it’s worth giving yourself a few days to visit all of the major attractions and to really experience its vibrant nature.
Museum Africa is a great place to start, providing a rich insight into the fascinating culture and history of the country, including the South Africa War. Look out for some beautiful public art on display, including Braamfontein’s metal tree sculptures and Hillbrow’s Angel of the North, which stands at five metres tall. The Wits Art Museum is also well worth a visit, displaying over 1,000 works and showcasing a huge collection of African art.
Call in at Neighbourgoods Market, serving up a fun range of food stalls featuring everything from baked goods to craft beers, before heading to Zoo Lake for a picnic and a relaxing afternoon on the green lawns.
Johannesburg also has a beautiful Kliptown Open Air Museum, which tells the story of the people who drafted the country’s Freedom Charter. For outdoor enthusiasts, a visit to the Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is a must. Settled in the middle of the Melville suburb, it’s one of the few places in the city that wasn’t touched by the gold rush.

Beyond Randburg
Travel beyond Johannesburg’s borders and you’ll be greeted by an array of historical and cultural sights, as well as some of the world’s most incredible wildlife.
Pretoria
South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria, is located just under a 50-minute drive along the M1 and N1. A strikingly beautiful destination, it bears the nickname Jacaranda City, because it’s covered in jacaranda flower blooms. The city’s connection to Nelson Mandela is its top draw. Visit the Palace of Justice where he was sentenced to life in prison, as well as the Union Buildings, where he was made president of the nation 30 years later. South Africa’s war history is recognised at Freedom Park, a huge monument honouring those killed in the country’s conflicts.
Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg National Park is a two-hour drive from Johannesburg via R24. This is the place to go see some of Africa’s most fascinating animals. It’s not unlikely to spot the Big Five while you’re here: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. The watering hole is a popular spot with both visitors and wildlife, as giraffes and hippos often gather here, along with some friendly (but skittish) antelope. Schedule at least a full day here to really experience nature.
Sun City
When it’s time for a retreat, Sun City is the place to go. Drive for two hours via R512 and R556 from Johannesburg and you’ll reach this stunning resort area, which borders the Pilanesberg National Park. There are many hotels here, as well as lakes, swimming pools, aviaries, and even a water park, which the whole family can enjoy. In the evening, theatre shows and casinos are the main attraction.
An Avis car hired from Randburg gives you the freedom to explore all this and much more.
